An airline booking system error led to a 101-year-old woman being treated as an infant, causing confusion and practical problems during her travel.
American Airlines has faced a repeated systems error resulting in a 101-year-old woman being mistaken for a baby. The error occurred because the booking system incorrectly registered Patricia’s birth year as 2022 instead of 1922. As a result, airline staff were unprepared for an elderly passenger, expecting an infant instead during flights and at airport services.
The issue first came to light during Patricia’s recent flight from Chicago to Marquette, Michigan, where despite having booked adult seats, the confusion persisted at the airport. Patricia, a former nurse born in 1922, humorously observed that the staff mistook her for a child while she is indeed “an old lady.”
The mix-up also led to practical problems, such as Patricia being left without her reserved wheelchair, under the false assumption she would not require one. She shared that her daughter had to manage their luggage by herself, walking nearly a mile because of the incorrect age recorded in the airline’s system.
Patricia hopes that American Airlines will address and resolve the IT issue before her next scheduled flight, where she will be 102 years old. As of the last reports, American Airlines had not yet commented on the ongoing situation.
