Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has initiated an investigation into suspected Russian attempts to manipulate the upcoming European Union elections through monetary influences and propaganda.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has called for an investigation following the discovery of suspected Russian interference in the upcoming European Union elections scheduled for June 6-9. The Belgian intelligence service has unearthed pro-Russian networks operating not only in Belgium but across multiple European countries, aiming to undermine support for Ukraine.
De Croo disclosed that these networks have engaged in activities such as offering money to members of the European Parliament to disseminate Russian propaganda. The primary objective, according to the investigation, is to swell the ranks of pro-Russian candidates in the EU Parliament, thereby advancing a narrative that could potentially weaken European support for Ukraine.
This inquiry has uncovered a cash payment scheme directed at influencing European politicians, a modus operandi that aligns with Russia’s broader strategic interests. Collaboration with Czech authorities has been essential in this investigation, given the recent sanctions imposed by Prague on a Putin-linked oligarch responsible for running a Russian media influence campaign.
De Croo noted the significance of addressing this threat to avoid any compromise to the EU’s electoral integrity. Further, he assured that Belgium has implemented measures to criminalize such foreign interference in its political processes. The ongoing investigations have highlighted the importance of reinforcing law enforcement across Europe to combat similar foreign threats effectively.
