Joanne Sharkey, 54, from Liverpool, has been charged with the murder of a newborn found dead near Gulliver’s World in 1998, as the case reopens amid public advisement against speculation.
Joanne Sharkey, a 54-year-old woman from Liverpool, has been charged with the murder of a baby found dead in 1998 near Gulliver’s World theme park in Warrington. The infant, referred to as “Callum” by investigators, was discovered in the Callands area and is believed to have been only a few hours old at the time of death. The post mortem indicated that the baby had been strangled and suffered head injuries.
The unresolved case, which has drawn considerable attention over the years, was revived with Sharkey’s recent charge. A man also arrested last year in connection with the investigation has since been released without charges.
Detaining judicial fairness, Detective Inspector Hannah Friend of Cheshire Police’s Major Crime Review Team urged the public to refrain from speculation and avoid sharing potential case details online, which could impact the legal proceedings.
The community has shown enduring compassion for Baby Callum, arranging a burial and funeral service for him in Warrington Cemetery with a headstone that reads, “Baby Callum, precious child of God.”
Joanne Sharkey is scheduled to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court for the commencement of her trial.
