The 2024 Paris Olympic Games torch lighting ceremony recently took place at the historical site of Ancient Olympia, Greece, marking the commencement of the torch relay. The event began with the traditional ignition of the torch, albeit this year using a backup flame due to overcast conditions which prevented the usual solar ignition. Greek Olympic rowing champion Stefanos Ntouskos was the first to carry the torch, initiating an 11-day relay across Greece which will cover over 3,100 miles.

The flame was kindled in front of the Temple of Hera by an actress portraying an ancient Greek priestess, reflecting the deep historical roots and the connection between the ancient and modern games. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who highlighted the torch as a symbol of peace and friendship amid current global conflicts.

The relay of the torch involves various modes of transport and will involve significant landmarks across Paris, including the Bataclan concert hall and the Shoah Memorial, underlining its themes of reconciliation and remembrance. The journey will culminate with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron in Paris on July 26, marking the official start of the Games.

This year’s Olympics holds particular significance as it will feature an equal number of male and female athletes competing for the first time, in addition to introducing competitive breakdancing, showcasing the Games’ evolving spirit of inclusivity and innovation.
