Members of the Aslef union have launched a series of strikes across England, significantly disrupting rail services. From 7th to 9th May 2024, the industrial action has affected 14 rail operators, including Southern, Southeastern, and South Western Railway.

The strikes have been organized due to a protracted dispute over pay. Aslef is demanding higher wages without additional conditions, whereas rail companies argue that any pay increase should come with major changes in working practices to diminish public subsidies. This disagreement has sparked widespread cancellations and disruptions since July 2022, contributing to substantial economic losses, particularly in the hospitality sector.

As a result, most train services on the affected networks have been cancelled or are operating on a significantly reduced schedule. The London Trams network has also seen part-day suspensions. Commuters are experiencing severe delays and overcrowding, with advice being given to check travel plans in advance and to only travel if necessary. The strike action includes a ban on overtime, causing further disruptions with trains starting later and finishing earlier than usual. Efforts to resolve the dispute have yet to yield a resolution, continuing the uncertainty and inconvenience for passengers.
