The M25 motorway in Surrey is scheduled for a closure between junctions 9 and 10 from May 10-13, to allow for the installation of large bridges as part of a £317 million road improvement scheme led by National Highways. The closure is intended to facilitate the construction of a new bridge and gantry, and is a component of an ongoing project aimed at adding more lanes and enhancing traffic flow for both safety and environmental benefits.
During this period, motorists are advised to travel only if necessary and to adhere strictly to the designated four diversion routes, which cater to various vehicle types and traffic directions. Failure to follow these routes could lead to fines, particularly as parts of the detour may pass through Ultra-Low Emission Zones (ULEZ), where non-compliant vehicles are subject to a £12.50 daily charge, and potential penalties up to £180.
This is the second such closure of the M25 this year, with previous disruptions caused by similar works two months prior. The closure is expected to affect traffic significantly, especially given the weekend’s forecasted temperatures reaching up to 26C, which might increase travel demand. National Highways has estimated that between 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles pass through the affected section per hour during peak weekend times.
Further closures are scheduled throughout the year, with all construction works expected to be completed by summer 2025.
