Travellers face major disruptions as the M25 closes for bridge installation between junctions 9 and 10, while the Blackwall Tunnel undergoes maintenance, all amid forecasts of high temperatures and concurrent transport strikes.
The M25 motorway is due for another weekend closure between junctions 9 and 10, starting at 9 pm on Friday and concluding at 6 am on Monday, for the installation of a new bridge and a gantry. This infrastructure update is part of a £317 million project aimed at improving this section of the motorway. Due to the complexity of the work, which includes laying concrete beams, an early reopening of this segment is unlikely. Authorities have indicated that drivers should prepare for possible delays, suggesting the packing of extra supplies like food and drink, especially considering the forecast of unusually high temperatures up to 26C.
The 19-mile diversion route prescribed will reroute traffic through A roads, potentially clogging local highways and extending travel times. The National Highways has emphasized the importance of following the signed diversion and resisted the temptation to seek alternative shortcuts to avoid adding to the congestion.
This closure coincides with the Blackwall Tunnel closures on weekends throughout May and June, required for essential maintenance work ahead of the new Silvertown Tunnel’s opening next year. Northbound traffic at Blackwall will be redirected through the southbound tunnel as needed. Transport for London has advised drivers to expect heightened congestion around alternative routes like the Rotherhithe Tunnel and the A13 Commercial Road, and to consider public transport alternatives where possible.
These disruptions align with a broader set of challenges on London’s transport network, including rail strikes and minor delays on the Docklands Light Railway and the Northern Line. Motorists and commuters are thus reminded to plan their travel meticulously this weekend and heed all traffic management guidelines to minimize inconvenience.
