In a severe escalation of hostilities, over 60 missiles were launched by Hezbollah targeting Kiryat Shmona in Northern Israel, inflicting substantial damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. This attack, marking a significant blow to the Iron Dome air defence system, occurred amidst heightened tensions in the Israel-Hamas conflict, with ongoing military engagement causing extensive casualties.

In southern Gaza, particularly in the city of Rafah, the situation is deteriorating as Israel intensifies its military actions, compelling large-scale evacuations. Over 110,000 individuals have been displaced northwards due to continued clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have issued warnings about Rafah turning into a “dangerous combat zone” with potential heavy strikes anticipated.

Simultaneously, hospitals in Rafah are operating at 250% capacity, grappling with acute shortages of essential supplies amid severed aid crossings. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported a rising death toll, predominantly among non-combatants, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding as entire areas are left in ruins.

Internationally, the situation has attracted criticism and concern. The US has expressed apprehensions regarding the possible misuse of American weapons by Israel in breach of international humanitarian law. Meanwhile, Australia and South Africa are seeking diplomatic and legal avenues to support Gaza, with Australia backing Palestine’s bid for full UN membership and South Africa requesting the UN’s top court to intercede to protect Palestinian lives.

This resurgence of violence brings renewed international attention to the region, with various attempts at mediation facing significant challenges amid the continuous conflict.
