The Metropolitan Police have issued warnings about the dangers of vape pens laced with harmful substances, including synthetic drugs like spice. This new trend of spiking has contributed to a 13% increase in reported incidents last year. Over 100 different types of drugs have been identified in such spiking cases within London over the past three years.

In response, the Met Police has launched Operation Lester to better coordinate investigations into these crimes, which are often difficult due to the rapid elimination of substances from victims’ bodies. Despite ongoing efforts, many cases remain unreported. Surveys indicate that approximately 900,000 people in the UK might have been victims of spiking in the previous year alone.

In London’s West End, police report around 114 incidents of drink spiking each month. Through initiatives like Operation Vigilant, they aim to patrol venues to deter and address spiking. Adding to community efforts, there are strategies such as drink covers provided at venues and the introduction of the “Ask for Angela” initiative, which allows individuals to discreetly seek help when they feel unsafe.

The increasing reports have led to heightened awareness and training among nightclub staff to recognize and respond to these incidents responsibly. Victims are strongly encouraged to report such crimes and seek necessary support.
