Dame Lesley Lawson, widely known as Twiggy, recently shared her surprise upon receiving a letter that she initially mistook for a tax notification. The iconic model and actress, now 76 years old, recounted the experience in an interview with Saga Magazine, expressing her shock at what was meant to be a notification of her damehood awarded during the 2019 New Year Honours for her contributions to fashion, the arts, and charity.

Twiggy, reflecting on the moment, said, “I was so shocked when it happened. I got this official letter and thought, ‘oh my God, it’s a tax letter’. Then I opened it and it was written in a kind of legalese language. I thought it was saying I was being made a CBE.” Following her confusion, she contacted the phone number listed on the letter, where she spoke to a representative who clarified that the honour was, in fact, a damehood.

Beyond her distinguished title, Twiggy is set to be the subject of an upcoming film, scheduled for release next month. This documentary will explore her upbringing, career, and personal relationships and will feature appearances by notable figures including Sir Paul McCartney, Dustin Hoffman, and fellow Dame Joanna Lumley. The film’s concept arose during a conversation Twiggy had with filmmaker Sadie Frost on her podcast, Tea With Twiggy. According to Twiggy, during their discussion, Frost expressed her desire to create a documentary about Twiggy, saying, “I’d love to do you,” citing her fascination with the 1960s.

The budding collaboration led to a lunch meeting the following week, allowing the project to progress further. Twiggy expressed her satisfaction with Frost’s approach, stating, “I loved the way Sadie was thinking, and she knew I’d want to be very involved. Making it has been a happy experience, she’s done a great job.”

Twiggy first rose to prominence in the fashion world in the 1960s, noted for her androgynous style that captivated the public’s attention. Throughout her illustrious career, she adorned the covers of prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Tatler. In addition to modelling, she earned accolades in theatre and film, winning two Golden Globe awards for her performance in The Boy Friend (1971) and receiving a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her Broadway debut in My One And Only in 1983.

In addition to her illustrious career in fashion and entertainment, Twiggy has also ventured into television, hosting her own show, Twiggy’s People, where she interviewed various celebrities, and making a brief appearance as a presenter on This Morning in the early 2000s alongside Coleen Nolan. She further broadened her acting repertoire with a role in the iconic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous when it was revived in 2001. The full interview with Twiggy will be available in the March edition of Saga Magazine.
