A significant altercation occurred in Bensham, Gateshead, at approximately 5pm on Tuesday, February 25, prompting a robust police response and resulting in the arrest of six individuals. The initial call to Northumbria Police concerned a welfare incident, but it escalated into a violent confrontation involving a considerable number of participants.

According to Northumbria Police, upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered hostility from a large group, leading to a disturbing episode captured on video. The footage reveals an altercation in which several individuals, some notably without shirts, appear to be striking police officers, including punches aimed at the officers’ heads.

As a result of the violence, two police officers sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to hospital for treatment. The police later announced that they had apprehended six individuals, aged between 15 and 54, on charges including affray, resisting arrest, and assaulting an emergency worker. Following the incident, all six individuals were released on bail while further investigations proceed.

In light of the incident, Northumbria Police issued a statement urging the public to refrain from speculating about the events surrounding the brawl, both within the community and on social media. A spokesperson for the police elaborated on the situation, stating: “We attended an address and two of our officers were subsequently assaulted. They were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.”
