Kyle Clifford, a 26-year-old man, is facing sentencing following the brutal murders of his ex-partner, her sister, and their mother in an incident that has raised concerns about misogyny and influences from social media. The attacks occurred in July 2023, in Bushey, Hertfordshire, where Clifford reportedly deceived Louise Hunt into allowing him into her family home. Once inside, he used a knife to fatally stab Carol Hunt, aged 61, before turning a crossbow on Louise, 25, and her sister Hannah, 28.

During the trial, it emerged that Clifford had displayed an interest in Andrew Tate, a controversial figure known for his outspoken misogynistic views and current legal troubles in Romania related to rape and human trafficking. The court heard testimony from friends of Louise Hunt, who described Clifford’s fascination with Tate, highlighting an instance where he was observed watching a video featuring Tate that depicted animals being drugged. “She asked the defendant why he was watching it and he said it was funny,” the friend stated.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC characterised Tate as a “poster boy for misogyny,” suggesting there was a direct correlation between Tate’s ideology and Clifford’s violent actions. In a critical statement, Morgan highlighted that it was no coincidence that Clifford was searching for Tate’s podcast the night before he committed the murders.

The court also heard accounts from Clifford’s employers that raised red flags about his attitudes towards women. Following his service in the British Army, a supervisor at a catering company expressed concern over how Clifford spoke about women, reporting that he made inappropriate comments regarding sexual activity and objectified women in the workplace. “For example, saying words such as ‘I could ride on that,’” Morgan quoted one supervisor as saying. Another referred to Clifford as exhibiting “immaturity” in his behaviour.

The case has drawn significant media attention, prompting discussions about the impact of influential figures like Andrew Tate on young men and their perceptions of women. As Clifford awaits sentencing, the tragic nature of the events, compounded by the alarming influences implicated in the case, remains a focus for both the public and law enforcement. More details are expected to emerge following the sentencing.
