A significant fire incident occurred in Banbury on Monday, March 11, at approximately 6.30pm. The blaze took place in the woodland area between Bretch Hill and the Calthorpe Gardens estate, located near a children’s play park. Initial investigations suggest that at least three individuals were involved in setting the fire intentionally.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, described the situation as part of an ongoing issue in the woodland area. “It has been an ongoing issue in that area of woodland but over the last two days the problem has escalated,” the resident commented. The neighbour indicated that on both Sunday and Monday evenings, the fire brigade had to be called due to the escalating activities which included burning various hazardous materials such as aerosols, tarpaulin, and paint tins, as well as cutting down trees to fuel the fire.

Concern for public safety was heightened as the fire was located on the edge of the woodland area, adjacent to a children’s park. Eyewitness accounts and footage shared with the Oxford Mail revealed individuals intentionally fuelling the fire, which included what appeared to be a large tarpaulin. Both the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Thames Valley Police have been approached for further comment on this incident.

In a separate but concurrent event, police were called to the scene of a violent altercation in Norwich on Monday, March 10, between 3.47pm and 3.57pm. The incident took place on Gentlemen’s Walk near Norwich Market, involving two men, one of whom was accompanied by a dog. Eyewitnesses reported that a verbal exchange escalated into a physical scuffle before police arrived.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Constabulary confirmed the details, stating that inquiries into the incident are ongoing. Further updates from the authorities are expected as they continue to investigate both the fire in Banbury and the altercation in Norwich.
