In a dramatic incident in Oldham, Greater Manchester, which unfolded late on Sunday night, police engaged in a high-speed chase of a vehicle believed to be stolen. The pursuit began around 10:30 PM when officers were alerted to the theft of a car from Delph, Oldham. Soon after the theft was reported, the stolen vehicle was spotted, prompting officers to attempt a stop.

The chase, captured on police dashcam footage, escalated as the driver recklessly entered a no-entry lane and drove against oncoming traffic on the A627, an action that included reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. Witnesses reported seeing the driver navigate dangerously close to other cars, causing motorists to swerve in an effort to avoid a collision.

The pursuit took a concerning turn when the driver attempted to make a sharp exit off the main road but crashed into railings. Following the collision, footage shows the driver vacating the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Upon searching the abandoned car, police found a machete and suspected drugs, leading to the arrest of a 19-year-old man. He is currently in police custody, where he faces several charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a bladed article, and possession of drugs.

Inspector Jamie Buchanan from Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Policing Unit remarked: “This latest arrest is a prime example of the work we are doing on a daily basis to trace stolen cars and remove drugs and weapons from our streets.” He noted the driver’s “blatant disregard for members of the public” and expressed gratitude that no injuries were reported, adding that the outcome could have been significantly worse without the prompt actions of the officers involved.

As investigations continue, local authorities are likely to review the incident as part of ongoing efforts to address car thefts and related crimes in the community.
