Three individuals have faced legal proceedings in connection with a significant fraud case amounting to over £5 million that revolves around one of the UK’s top-performing sixth form colleges. Yasmin Anjum Sarwar, 43, and Nadeem Sarwar, 48, both residing in Cardiff, along with Ragu Sivapalan, 39, from Penylan, Cardiff, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for initial hearings.

During the court proceedings, Yasmin and Nadeem Sarwar entered not guilty pleas to a series of nine allegations related to fraud and theft, while Ragu Sivapalan similarly pleaded not guilty to charges of false accounting that reportedly spanned from 2013 to 2016. The head magistrate, Wayne Mortimer, made the decision to adjourn the case, setting a pre-trial hearing for May 6 at Cardiff Crown Court.

All three defendants were granted bail, although a condition was imposed requiring Yasmin and Nadeem Sarwar to refrain from communicating with each other. This legal situation arises in the context of Cardiff Sixth Form College, which has previously garnered a reputation as one of the UK’s leading educational establishments, having been awarded the title of “Britain’s brainiest school.” In 2024, the college continued its streak by achieving the best A-level results among independent schools for the 13th consecutive year.

Since the alleged fraud incidents, Cardiff Sixth Form College has changed ownership and is currently under new management. The college gained broader recognition in 2016 when it was featured in a BBC documentary titled “Britain’s Brainiest School,” showcasing its academic successes.
