Rutland, known for being the smallest county in the UK, has persistently upheld its independence from neighbouring Leicestershire and other surrounding counties, a status it has maintained for centuries. Located in the scenic East Midlands, Rutland is neighboured by Lincolnshire to the north-east and Northamptonshire to the south-west. Its geographical and historical significance is underscored by its local governance and distinct identity.

Transport infrastructure within Rutland is notably limited, with only one railway station situated in its largest town, Oakham. According to statistics released by the Office for Rail and Road (ORR), between April 2023 and March 2024, Rutland recorded the fewest rail journeys compared to other local authorities in the East Midlands. The ORR’s annual report indicated that Rutland accounted for 206,000 journeys at Oakham station, making it the 1,309th busiest station in the UK during the same timeframe. For context, Nottingham led the region with 7.2 million journeys across two stations, followed by Derbyshire and Leicester, which had 5.8 million and 5.3 million journeys, respectively.

Oakham station, originally inaugurated in 1847, is positioned on the Syston and Peterborough Railway, also referred to as the Birmingham to Peterborough Line. The station features an Italianate architectural style characterised by its red-brick construction, buff brick dressings, and a Welsh slate roof, all complemented by brick ridge and end stacks. While Oakham station is primarily served by CrossCountry trains connecting Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport and Cambridge, it also offers infrequent services from East Midlands Railway to London St. Pancras.

Despite its limited rail services, the station is an essential transport hub for many residents of Rutland, illustrating the local authority’s reliance on this solitary mode of public transport. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges residents face in accessing broader transport networks while living in one of the UK’s most charming yet least populated areas.
