Former Belarusian NHL player Konstantin Koltsov has died at the age of 42, confirmed by Russian club Salavat Yulaev. Koltsov, celebrated for his speed during his ice hockey career, was also known for his participation with the Belarus national team in multiple Olympics and his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2002 to 2006.

At the time of his death, Koltsov was in Miami, where he had been supporting his partner, Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, who is currently ranked world No 2. The couple, who publicly shared their relationship since June 2021, was often seen together, with Koltsov actively present in Sabalenka’s sports engagements, including her Australian Open victory earlier in the year.

Salavat Yulaev released a statement mourning Koltsov, underscoring his influence as a player and coach, and highlighting his character, a mix of strength and cheerfulness that made him a respected and beloved figure. His legacy extends beyond the ice, notably in his personal life with Sabalenka and his contribution to Russian ice hockey as an accomplished player and assistant coach.

Koltsov is survived by three children from a previous relationship, and his death follows the earlier loss of his father, adding to the personal tragedies experienced by those close to him. The sports community, especially ice hockey and tennis fans, are united in grief over Koltsov’s sudden passing, remembering him both for his athletic achievements and his supportive role in Sabalenka’s career.

The incident has cast uncertainty over Sabalenka’s participation in the imminent Miami Open, as she faces this challenging period. Tributes from around the sports world have been pouring in, commemorating a talented athlete and supportive partner whose life was tragically cut short in Miami.
