The sports community is in mourning after the deaths of former NHL player Konstantin Koltsov and another ex-NHL enforcer Chris Simon, impacting the tennis star Aryna Sabalenka and the Canadian town of Wawa, Ontario, respectively.
In two separate incidents, the sports world has mourned the loss of two former athletes, leaving their respective communities in sorrow.
In Miami, Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 2 ranked Belarusian tennis star, is set to compete in the Miami Open amidst the tragic news of her partner’s death. Konstantin Koltsov, a former professional ice hockey player known for his time with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and the Belarus national team, was found deceased at the age of 43. The Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed Koltsov’s death as an “apparent suicide,” noting that no foul play is suspected. Koltsov, who also served as an assistant coach for the Russian ice hockey team Salavat Yulaev, left a significant mark on the sport during his career. Despite the personal tragedy, Sabalenka has decided to proceed with her participation in the Miami Open but will refrain from engaging in press interviews during the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Canadian town of Wawa, Ontario, is reeling from the news of the death of Chris Simon, a former NHL enforcer, at the age of 52. Simon, celebrated for his robust physical play, participated in over 100 fights and recorded 1,824 penalty minutes across more than 15 seasons in the NHL. He was renowned not just for his formidable presence on the ice but also for his kindness and respectfulness off it. Simon’s contributions to hockey were substantial, culminating in a Stanley Cup victory with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. He was also an influential figure for First Nations hockey players in Canada. Following his passing, the hockey community has come together to pay tribute to Simon, acknowledging both his contributions to the sport and his character outside of the rink.
Both Sabalenka and Simon’s communities express their sorrow, each dealing with their loss in different ways, yet both are united in their grief and remembrance of their loved ones’ legacies.
