The UK’s newly-appointed Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron, begins his first official visit to the Indo-Pacific, focusing on enhancing trade and security relations with Thailand and Australia amidst concerns over China’s regional assertiveness.
Lord David Cameron, the newly-appointed Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, embarked on his first official visit to the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on strengthening ties with Thailand and Australia. This move is part of the UK’s strategic agenda to enhance its trade and security relationships within the region amid concerns over China’s assertiveness.
During his visit to Thailand, Lord Cameron aims to bolster cooperation across various sectors, including defence, health, and climate issues. He met with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to sign a strategic partnership road-map, which will encompass collaboration in defence, trade, climate, and education. This agreement is set against the backdrop of the upcoming 170-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UK and Thailand. The British Foreign Office has highlighted Thailand’s vital role in promoting peace in Myanmar and upholding international law, besides underscoring the economic benefits that a closer relationship could bring to the UK.
Following his stay in Thailand, Lord Cameron proceeded to Australia for the annual Australia-UK minister consultations. In Australia, a significant defence agreement was signed between UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps and his Australian counterpart, Richard Marles. This agreement aims to enhance security consultation and facilitate joint military operations, with a specific focus on maritime security, in response to the region’s strategic challenges. Furthermore, Australia committed to joining a coalition led by the UK and Latvia to support Ukraine in developing drone capabilities.
The collaborations with Thailand and Australia underscore the UK’s commitment to strengthening its geopolitical and economic ties in the Indo-Pacific, addressing global challenges, and navigating the complexities of increased regional uncertainty.
