Following a deadly attack in Moscow, claimed by ISIS-K, European countries have escalated security measures amidst concerns of similar threats. The heightened vigilance comes ahead of major events like the Paris Olympics and the European Championship.
European nations have heightened their security measures following a catastrophic attack on a Moscow concert hall, which resulted in the loss of 133 lives. The attack, claimed by ISIS-K, an affiliate of the Islamic State group, has led to increased vigilance across the continent, especially with significant events like the Paris Olympics and the European Championship in Germany approaching.
Countries such as Italy, France, and Germany are among those that have bolstered security. Italy, for instance, has intensified surveillance around Holy Week activities leading up to Easter. Meanwhile, Germany, acknowledging the acute threat from Islamic extremists, has not altered its risk assessment post-attack. In Serbia, armed police officers have been deployed on the streets of Belgrade as a precautionary measure, a decision that has sparked criticism from political opponents.
ISIS-K, known for its deadly tactics including the 2021 Kabul airport bombing, has been linked to various plots in Europe, which has been a concern for European countries. French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted intelligence linking the group to attempted attacks in France. This affiliate’s aggressive nature has raised alarms, prompting countries to adopt stringent security measures to ensure public safety.
The attack in Moscow has stirred international condemnation. Graphic footage depicting the brutality of the attack and the maltreatment of suspects has circulated, drawing criticism and calls for justice. Russian authorities have charged four suspects in connection with the attack, amidst calls from Russian MPs for the death penalty. Despite the Kremlin’s silence on these matters, international leaders have condemned the violence, attributing it to the ISIS Khorasan Province.
As concerns over the threat posed by ISIS-K grow, experts warn that other capital cities might be at risk of similar attacks, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in combating terrorism.
