An Aberdeenshire school faces criticism after pupils with additional support needs were omitted from a class photo, prompting a backlash from parents and officials.
Parents at Aboyne Primary School in Aberdeenshire were shocked to discover that pupils with additional support needs (ASN) had been left out of a class photo. The controversy arose when families were presented with two versions of the photo, one of which excluded the ASN children. This incident has prompted an investigation by the school and an apology from Aberdeenshire Council, emphasising that the exclusion was not a decision made by the school itself.
Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has criticized the exclusion as “shameful” and stressed the importance of inclusivity within schools. The incident has led to a united response from parents, many of whom have chosen not to purchase the photos in solidarity with the affected children.
The photography company responsible, Tempest Photography, admitted the exclusion was not in line with their usual practices and has initiated its own investigation into the matter. Both the company and Aberdeenshire Council have issued apologies, citing a commitment to inclusivity and the importance of representing all students in school activities and memorabilia.
The incident drew widespread condemnation and has emphasized the necessity of ensuring all children are treated equally and with respect in educational environments.
