Renowned Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei is set to return to New York with a new public art installation on Roosevelt Island, marking his first major project in the city since 2017. The Four Freedoms Park Conservancy announced on Thursday that it had commissioned Ai Weiwei to launch a new public art initiative titled Art X Freedom, which will focus on exploring themes of social justice and freedom through site-specific projects.

Ai Weiwei’s installation, Camouflage, will be unveiled on 10 September at the Franklin D Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, located at the southernmost tip of Roosevelt Island. This date aligns with significant milestones, including the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The artwork features an open sanctuary and a structure draped in camouflage netting, designed to encourage viewers to reflect on “vulnerability and protection, truth and concealment, and the reverberating impacts of violent human conflicts around the world,” according to a press release from the conservancy.

The new project forms part of the Art X Freedom programme, which will provide annual funding of $250,000 for public art commissions that engage with political and cultural issues of our time. Artists chosen for the programme will also receive a $25,000 prize. Agnes Gund, co-chair of the initiative and a prominent philanthropist, underscored the role of public art as a reflection of contemporary society, stating, “Public art is a mirror to our times. Art X Freedom speaks to the urgent need to protect freedom for all, including freedom of speech, expression and the right to dissent – values that are the bedrock of democracy and justice.”

Allison Binns, the initiative’s other co-chair and a venture capitalist, praised Ai Weiwei’s enduring global influence, saying, “Ai Weiwei is globally renowned for his provocative and thought-provoking body of work and his staunch and unwavering advocacy for human rights. We could not have found a more perfect partner or resonant project to help us introduce Art X Freedom to the world and inspire park visitors.”

Camouflage will be on display until 1 December 2025, and the conservancy plans to announce finalists for the 2026 installation later this year.

Ai Weiwei, now 67, has long been recognised as one of the most politically outspoken artists of his generation. His previous New York installation in 2017 consisted of a series of cages placed around the city, protesting against harsh US immigration policies under the Trump administration. His activism and art have often drawn government scrutiny; notably, in 2010, he was detained by Chinese authorities for 80 days under charges widely regarded as politically motivated. Since leaving China in 2015, Ai Weiwei has maintained studios across the globe, including in London and Berlin, and currently resides in Portugal. He is also the subject of a major retrospective at the Seattle Museum of Art, showcasing four decades of his work.

The Franklin D Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park itself commemorates the 32nd US president’s landmark speech on human rights, making it a fitting venue for Ai Weiwei’s Camouflage, which reflects his personal commentary on contemporary political and cultural issues. The Art X Freedom initiative, by commissioning such works, aims to foster dialogue on critical issues through the medium of public art.
