In an unprecedented move, Balmoral Castle, the Scottish summer retreat of King Charles III, will offer guided tours to the public, allowing a rare glimpse into the private lives of the royals.
For the first time since its acquisition in the mid-19th century, Balmoral Castle, the Scottish summer retreat of King Charles III, will be accessible to the public through guided tours named The Balmoral Experience. This initiative, occurring from July 1 to August 4, marks an unprecedented move, allowing visitors to explore the private quarters used by the King, Queen Camilla, and other royals. The tours, an effort to enhance the accessibility of royal residences, will showcase the castle’s interior, including the drawing room, dining room, library, and a collection of royal artifacts.
The castle, deeply rooted in royal history, was a favoured sanctuary of Queen Victoria and later, Queen Elizabeth II. Its opening to the public is part of King Charles’s broader aim to foster transparency and public engagement with royal traditions and practices. With only 40 available tickets per day, interested guests are encouraged to book in advance for this rare insight into the royal estate.
Priced at £100 for the tour and £150 with afternoon tea, the experience promises an intimate glimpse into the monarchy’s lifestyle and heritage. This trial period reflects the evolving relationship between the monarchy and the public, offering a unique opportunity to walk through the rooms and halls that have witnessed nearly two centuries of British history.
