The Bowelbabe Fund, created in memory of Dame Deborah James, has brought attention to the worrying forecast that bowel cancer cases in the UK are projected to rise to 47,700 by 2040, up from the current 42,800. This increase is attributed to the UK’s growing and aging population. Furthermore, annual deaths from the illness are expected to escalate from 16,700 to 19,100. In response, Cancer Research UK has committed to continuing its support for research and projects targeting this disease.

Dame Deborah James, who died at the age of 40, was a prominent advocate for bowel cancer awareness. Her efforts, including the establishment of the Bowelbabe Fund which has raised over £13 million, have had a lasting impact. One of those affected by her campaigning, Ellie Wilcock, spoke about how James’s journey offered her hope and a sense of empowerment during her cancer treatment.

These findings highlight the ongoing struggle against bowel cancer in the UK and the vital role of funds and initiatives like the Bowelbabe Fund in supporting those affected and advancing research in the field.
