Former Liberal party staffer Bruce Lehrmann grapples with millions in legal fees following a failed defamation lawsuit, with a judgment on the final costs expected by the end of the week.
Former Liberal party staffer Bruce Lehrmann faced significant legal costs ranging from $8 million to $10 million related to his defamation lawsuit. The federal court in Sydney revealed that Lehrmann was under a no-win, no-fee agreement with his legal team, who did not have third-party funding to cover these expenses. Consequently, following his loss in the defamation case, Lehrmann was ordered to pay the costs of the respondents, although not his legal team’s fees. Network Ten, the successful party in the lawsuit, may potentially bear the burden of their own legal costs. Lehrmann’s civil trial and the associated legal fees have garnered attention, with costs hearings concluding and a judgment on the final costs due by Friday. Lehrmann has until May 31 to consider an appeal.
In separate news, Prince Harry returned from the UK after attending the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. However, he did not meet with King Charles III or Prince William due to scheduling conflicts. The Duke of Sussex is now heading to Nigeria with Meghan Markle to continue their tour. During his UK visit, Harry was supported by relatives from his late mother’s side of the family, in the absence of his father and brother. His visit to St Paul’s Cathedral for the event attracted large crowds and notable acknowledgment despite the absence of other high-profile royals. The situation between Harry and the key members of the Royal Family remains notably strained following his move to the US in 2020.
