In a historic move, Buckingham Palace’s balcony room and east wing, along with Balmoral Castle, will be accessible to the public, offering a unique glimpse into the life of the British monarchy.
For the first time ever, Buckingham Palace is opening its famous balcony room and the east wing to the public this summer, allowing visitors a rare glimpse into the heart of the British monarchy. The announcement comes as part of a broader effort to allow public access to various royal residences, including Balmoral Castle.
Specifically, the balcony room in Buckingham Palace, a site synonymous with royal family public appearances, will be accessible as part of guided tours. These tours are linked to a £369 million renovation effort that has revitalized the east wing of the palace, erected between 1847 and 1849 under Queen Victoria to support her expanding family. This wing, known for its Chinese-themed décor reminiscent of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, will showcase its principal floor to the public in July and August. Tickets for the Buckingham Palace East Wing Highlights Tours, running from July 15 to August 31 and priced at £75 for adults, go on sale April 9.
Visitors will experience a blend of art and history, including a stroll through the principal corridor adorned with works by artists like Thomas Gainsborough and a visit to the center room, highlighted by an 18th-century Chinese silk and a recently restored glass chandelier.
Similarly, Balmoral Castle, the royal family’s private Highland residence, will open its doors to small tour groups this summer. A sign of the high demand for access to royal residences, tickets for guided tours of Balmoral Castle sold out within 24 hours of becoming available. Running from July 1 to August 4, before the King and Queen’s summer arrival, these tours are unique as they allow access beyond the traditionally open ballroom and grounds. Priced at £100, or £150 with afternoon tea, the tours offer a historical journey through the castle’s rooms, from the Victorian era to modern times. Balmoral Castle, acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1855, stands as a testament to the royal family’s heritage and their fondness for this Highland home.
Both Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle tours represent an unparalleled opportunity for the public to explore the rich history and exquisite interiors of Britain’s royal residences this summer.
