During a diplomatic tour of Europe, Chinese President Xi Jinping has engaged in a series of significant discussions, touching on issues ranging from global conflicts to trade dynamics. In a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron, Xi advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza and backed a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, including supporting Palestine’s bid for full United Nations membership.

Amid these developments, Xi also criticized NATO for its past military actions, specifically referencing the 1999 bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia. He pledged to strengthen ties with Serbia and emphasized the need for peace during his visit commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between France and China.

However, Xi’s visit has also highlighted tensions surrounding fair trade practices. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen voiced concerns over potential trade wars due to what the EU perceives as unfair subsidies bolstering Chinese manufacturing sectors. This has raised fears in Europe that domestic industries such as electric vehicles and steel could be adversely affected.

Von der Leyen indicated the EU’s readiness to employ trade defense mechanisms to safeguard against such practices, noting that, while the EU and China maintain strong economic ties, the EU might adopt a stance similar to the U.S. in addressing these concerns. The U.S., unlike the EU, has already implemented several sanctions against Chinese firms accused of supporting Russia’s military actions.

Moreover, President Xi and President Macron shared a personal meeting in the Pyrenees mountains at the Tourmalet Pass, an area of special significance to Macron due to his childhood connections. This meeting followed a state visit in France that included formal ceremonies and a state dinner at the Elysee Palace, illustrating the powerful personal dynamics at play in diplomatic relations.

As Xi’s tour continues, his engagements in countries like Serbia and Hungary aim to deepen both economic and diplomatic ties amidst a backdrop of broader international challenges and discourse.
