George Washington University in Washington DC has seen a significant police presence and multiple arrests resulting from intensifying protests related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Over the past three weeks, demonstrations on university campuses across the United States have led to at least 2,600 arrests at 50 campuses.

At George Washington University, tensions escalated as protesters established an encampment in University Yard, leading to clashes with law enforcement. The police action followed when demonstrators marched to the university president’s residence, vocalizing criticisms against President Granberg, accusing him of complicity in genocide. This led to a deployment of pepper spray and reports of physical altercations between officers and protesters. Arrests were made for assault of a police officer and unlawful entry among other charges.

The university has issued warnings of possible suspensions for students involved in protest activities, citing violations of policies and incidents of intimidation and vandalism. On their part, demonstrators have accused university officials of ignoring their demands, which include the divestment from academic partnerships in Israel.

Authorities, including the Metropolitan Police Department, noted the protests had increasingly become volatile, necessitating the dispersal of demonstrators from the campus. Both the university president and the police department have been contacted for further comments on this ongoing issue. Meanwhile, the handling of the protests by the authorities is set to face scrutiny from congressional members concerned about the response to what has been described by some participants as peaceful protests.
