A couple from Sparkbrook, Birmingham, has received lengthy prison sentences following a series of brutal and sadistic attacks on a woman, which included forced consumption of human urine. Imaan Coley, aged 37, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Mohammed Khan, were convicted of multiple offences including false imprisonment, grievous bodily harm, and administering a noxious substance.

The court proceedings, held at Birmingham Crown Court, revealed that the couple had subjected their victim to extreme humiliation and violence throughout their ordeal, which spanned several months in 2023. Sentencing took place on March 17, with Coley receiving a 14-year prison term, while Khan was sentenced to 11 years. Both individuals were additionally given four-year extended licence periods after being deemed ‘dangerous’ by Judge Peter Cooke.

Judge Cooke described the victim’s situation as one of intense control and cruelty, stating that she was kept in a state of distress, being forced to remain within her home under constant surveillance. The first victim, who was disabled, was manipulated by Coley who had pretended to befriend her. Judge Cooke noted that Coley effectively ‘cuckooed’ her home, moving in alongside Khan and allowed him to use the property to carry out his drug dealings. During this time, the victim was made to sleep on a hard floor after Coley disposed of her mattress, significantly impacting her wellbeing.

Details revealed during the trial indicated that Coley subjected the victim to a series of brutal assaults, including physical beatings and psychological torment. In one instance, she set fire to the woman’s hair and made her consume bleach, disguising it as vodka. The victim was deprived of food, forced to watch her own meals being given to pets, and reduced to scavenging for scraps from the bin for sustenance.

The violence continued with Khan, who was involved in a separate incident where he assaulted another man with a hammer while defending a vehicle he claimed was being stolen. The victim sustained serious injuries during this particularly vicious attack.

A further scene of violence unfolded on August 12, when the couple attacked another woman in a different location. Judge Cooke described the events that transpired in her flat as “horrific” and “the most appalling display of cruelty,” noting how the woman was stripped and humiliated, with her body piercings forcibly removed. In a particularly grotesque moment, Coley orchestrated a situation where the first victim was compelled to urinate into the mouth of the second victim, illustrating the depths of cruelty displayed by both perpetrators.

Coley, who had a troubled past marked by drug issues and a difficult upbringing, was described by her defence lawyer, Daniel Oscroft, as having suffered severely due to her toxic relationship with Khan. Oscroft explained that Coley’s history of addiction had been exacerbated by post-natal depression and subsequent relapses. Meanwhile, Khan’s lawyer, Jasvir Mann, portrayed him as immature and remorseful, highlighting his descent into addiction after having come from a stable family background.

Coley’s criminal activity prior to her latest convictions includes a past marked by burglaries aimed at vulnerable individuals. Khan had previously been linked to a £10,000 Crimestoppers appeal and admitted to both his role in drug dealing and his violence.

This case underscores the severe nature of domestic violence and abuse, particularly highlighting the dynamics of control and manipulation involved in such relationships.
