The detainees had initially entered the US via the southern border in 2023 and were not flagged for security concerns at that time. However, later investigations revealed possible links to overseas ISIS members.
Those arrested are currently held in ICE custody pending removal proceedings. Law enforcement officials decided to opt for immediate expulsion under ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations authority, rather than extended surveillance by the FBI.
In a recent testimony, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the heightened threat level in the US, particularly post-October 7th events.
