Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has condemned a cyberattack by Russian hackers on Germany’s ruling coalition, which exacerbates the already strained relations between Germany and Russia.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has accused Russian state-sponsored hackers linked to the military intelligence service of conducting a cyberattack on the Social Democrats, part of Germany’s ruling coalition. Baerbock described the attack as “absolutely intolerable” during a press conference in Adelaide, Australia. This incident escalates the tensions between Germany and Russia, which were already strained due to Germany’s support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
The cyberattack, attributed to a group identified as APT28 or Fancy Bear, occurred after Berlin sent tanks to Ukraine, which was deemed as an act of intervention by Russia. APT28 has been recognized by international security bodies like the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre as a skilled and persistent cyber threat. Baerbock emphasized that the attack would not go unanswered and highlighted the broader issue of cyber warfare threatening global security.
During her visit to Australia—the first by a German foreign minister in 13 years—Baerbock met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. They discussed strengthening defense cooperation, particularly in the face of growing security threats in the Pacific region, which includes concerns over China’s influence.
Alongside security talks, they deliberated on the Israel-Gaza conflict, stressing the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions. The discussions also touched on global diplomatic efforts in reaction to recent developments, such as Palestine’s bid for full United Nations membership, a vote scheduled for May 10 following the U.S. veto of a prior proposal. This issue broaches the broader complexities of Middle Eastern peace dynamics and reflects differing international stances on Palestinian statehood within the context of the envisioned two-state solution.
The German Foreign Minister’s engagement in Australia reflects an active approach to addressing both traditional and digital threats impacting global stability, while aligning with international allies like Australia to address shared concerns in global security and diplomatic relations.
