Mothin Ali, a Green Party councillor, has publicly apologised after his election victory speech caused controversy. Following his win in the Gipton and Harehills ward of Leeds City Council, Ali used the phrase ‘Allahu Akbar’ and expressed support for Gaza and Palestine, which led to backlash and calls for his suspension. The Leeds Jewish Representative Council has approached Green Party leaders to address Ali’s previous remarks regarding the Jewish community. In response to the criticism, Ali stated that ‘Allahu Akbar’ is traditionally a celebratory phrase in Islam and affirmed his opposition to violence, calling for a ceasefire in the conflict. He also reiterated his commitment to his constituents and the Palestinian cause. The incident is under investigation by the Green Party, which has yet to release any further statements. Ali secured his council seat with 3,070 votes, outpacing his Labour opponent.
