The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a directive for Israel to ensure the provision of food and medical aid to Gaza, addressing concerns of an impending famine that could affect the region within weeks. Reports indicate a critical situation with 31 deaths, including 27 children, due to malnutrition and dehydration. Under the court’s ruling, Israel is tasked with coordinating with the United Nations to supply essential services and humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s 2.2 million inhabitants. This includes food, water, electricity, and medical supplies. The ICJ also instructed Israel to prevent military actions that infringe upon the rights of Palestinians under the Genocide Convention.

The genesis of the conflict can be traced back to attacks led by Hamas into Israel, leading to casualties on both sides. In response to the ruling, Israel has refuted allegations of blocking aid and denied accusations of genocide, attributing issues in aid distribution to the United Nations.

Separately, the Australian government temporarily suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), following allegations made by Israel regarding the involvement of UNRWA staff members in a Hamas-led attack. Documents revealed that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia hastily investigated these allegations before deciding to pause a $6 million funding contribution. The suspension lasted seven weeks, underscoring the agency’s critical role in providing humanitarian aid in Gaza.

In parallel, Ireland’s Deputy Premier and Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheal Martin, called on Israel to “show humanity” by allowing more aid into Gaza amid the “catastrophic” humanitarian condition. The call was made in light of the ICJ’s order for Israel to open more land crossings for aid delivery. Further emphasizing the urgency, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, referred to the situation in Gaza as a “man-made disaster” requiring immediate intervention. Irish President Michael D Higgins echoed the sentiment, advocating for global moral responsibility to support ceasefire efforts, aid delivery, and hostage release in Gaza.

The unfolding crisis in Gaza, marked by fatalities, escalating violence, and a severe humanitarian predicament, has attracted wide international attention, compelling nations and international bodies to intervene and seek measures to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s civilian population.
