Allegations of abuse at Whitefield School in Walthamstow, East London, have emerged, involving mistreatment of children in “calming rooms” during the period between 2014 and 2017. The BBC investigation revealed disturbing CCTV footage showing staff members physically abusing pupils and subjecting them to inhumane conditions, such as being left to sit in their own urine and eat crumbs off the floor.

Whitefield School, managed by the Flourish Learning Trust and catering to approximately 370 pupils, primarily with special needs, has been heavily criticized following these revelations. Reports highlighted that some staff implicated in the abuse are still employed at the school, with no significant legal repercussions or dismissals occurring as of yet.

The investigation disclosed that the aforementioned abuse largely went unreported until 2021 when a new leadership team discovered 44 memory sticks containing CCTV footage. This prompted a police investigation into the matter. Despite the extent of the misconduct, referrals to the Disclosure and Barring Service were inconsistently made, pointing to a lack of accountability within the school’s administration.

The “calming rooms” have since been closed by the Flourish Learning Trust, and some changes in leadership have been effected. However, concerns remain regarding the sufficiency of these actions and the ongoing safety and well-being of pupils.

The Children’s Commissioner for England has condemned the treatment of the students and emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulations regarding the use of seclusion in educational settings. Meanwhile, parents and child welfare experts have expressed their distress and outrage over the conditions exposed by the investigation, which depicted treatment more severe than that experienced by young offenders.

The incidents have led to widespread calls for systemic changes to protect vulnerable pupils in special schools across the UK, highlighting the imperative for effective safeguarding measures within educational institutions.
