James Norton has candidly shared an alarming experience related to his diabetes that he describes as having caused “pandemonium” during a high-profile event. The incident occurred at the GQ Men of the Year Awards last November, where the actor, known for his roles in “Happy Valley” and “McMafia,” found himself in a precarious situation during a speech made by Jude Law. Despite having administered insulin in anticipation of a carbohydrate-rich meal, Norton was surprised by a low-carb starter and a prolonged wait for the main course. This led to his blood sugar plummeting dangerously low, causing distress in a prime social setting.

“I was dripping with sweat,” Norton recounted, reflecting on the tension of being seated at the high table opposite Nicole Kidman under the scrutiny of numerous cameras. As his condition worsened, he discreetly summoned a waiter, urgently requesting orange juice. “That caused pandemonium to break loose,” he recalled, describing the chaotic yet humorous response as a bowl of steaming potatoes was eventually brought to his table amidst the unfolding drama. Such moments, he admitted, are not uncommon for those managing diabetes, as the challenges of timing meals can easily lead to critical situations.

Living with Type 1 diabetes since the age of 22, Norton has navigated the complexities of this chronic condition through technological advancements. He now employs a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that alerts him to fluctuations in his blood sugar levels, a change that has significantly improved his quality of life. With real-time monitoring, he finds a sense of control that previously eluded him. “Since then, my glucose is just more controlled. I sleep so much better,” he articulated, highlighting how the CGM has afforded him a newfound freedom from the anxieties tied to unpredictable blood sugar episodes.

Norton expressed gratitude for this device, likening it to a burden lifted. “You cannot underestimate how much difference Dexcom gives you in your life. It gives you power,” he noted, underscoring the relief shared by his supportive family, who also relies on glucose monitoring technology. The actor’s enthusiasm for these advancements is mirrored by a broader public interest, especially as new products, like the over-the-counter continuous glucose monitors launched by Dexcom this past year, become available.

Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Norton refuses to let diabetes restrict his professional aspirations. His resolve is further bolstered by a strong familial history of the disease, as both his mother and sister also manage diabetes. “It would never impede me from taking on any role, particularly physically demanding ones,” he stated, emphasising his determination to continue pursuing challenging characters in his acting career.

Beyond his personal narrative, Norton also actively participates in raising awareness about diabetes. His involvement in educational initiatives led by the NHS reflects his commitment to highlighting the realities faced by those living with this condition. “I have extraordinary sympathy for anyone who has something which makes them a little bit different,” he remarked, showcasing his empathy and understanding towards others navigating similar challenges.

As he prepares for his next role in the upcoming BBC drama “King & Conqueror,” scheduled for release later this year, Norton not only carries the weight of his personal experiences but also the hope of advancing awareness and understanding of Type 1 diabetes. In this capacity, he continues to inspire those grappling with their own health adversities, creating a narrative of resilience and hope.
