With more than 50,000 runners including celebrities and record-setting costumed participants, this year’s London Marathon showcased not only athleticism but also a commitment to inclusivity and charity.
During this year’s London Marathon, a record number of over 50,000 participants, including celebrities and individuals in novelty costumes, ran the 26.2 miles through the capital. The event featured dry and bright weather conditions, making it ideal for both runners and spectators.
Prominent figures like comedian Romesh Ranganathan and actress Ruth Wilson participated, focusing on raising funds for various charities. Among the quirky achievements, Lee Baynton set a record for the fastest marathon in an inflatable costume, and Warren Parish broke the world record for the fastest marathon dressed as a cheerleader.
The marathon also saw participation from other celebrities such as Joel Dommett and Harry Judd, alongside EastEnders actors Jamie Borthwick and Emma Barton, who ran in character. Additionally, the professional category was won by Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir and Kenya’s Alexander Munyao in their respective women’s and men’s races.
A notable change in this year’s marathon was the equal prize money awarded to wheelchair and non-disabled race winners, highlighting the event’s commitment to inclusivity. The marathon further supported participants with facilities like female urinals and a family support area.
The London Marathon is recognized as the world’s largest annual one-day fundraising event. The previous edition successfully raised £63 million for numerous charitable causes.
