Police in Staffordshire responded to reports of a man reportedly on a “wrecking spree” at a housing estate in Bentilee, where he was alleged to have been using a shovel to vandalise electrical infrastructure. The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon, March 8, when officers were called to the scene following numerous reports from local residents.

Kelly Hill, a 40-year-old visitor to the estate, witnessed the man’s activities while spending time with family on Ubberley Drive. Initially perceiving the situation as benign, Hill stated that she thought the individual was digging. However, her perspective quickly changed when he began to strike a green electrical transformer box.

Describing the sequence of events, Hill recounted, “We decided to keep an eye on him then. He walked across to the flats next door and started smashing the brown internet box.” Concern for their safety escalated when her brother approached the man, only to be threatened with the shovel. Hill mentioned that she urged her brother to back away due to her panic over the confrontation.

To mitigate the situation, Hill contacted Staffordshire Police, expressing her worry as the individual moved toward the Bentilee Neighbourhood Centre on Dawlish Drive, an area known for its busyness. She noted the promptness of the police response, stating, “The police were really good. They arrived quickly.” She was able to remain on the line with an officer who assured her that help was close by.

The police apprehended a suspect at approximately 1pm. The authorities are appealing to any witnesses of the incident to come forward and report any information by calling 101.
