A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicions of arson following a severe fire that took place in a residential property on Newick Road, Hackney, London, leaving four people hospitalized. The incident, which occurred on a recent date, resulted in significant damage to both the ground and first floors of the three-storey building. According to the Metropolitan Police, the fire, thought to be ignited deliberately, injured three nearby residents and one individual passing by the area.

In response to the blaze, approximately sixty firefighters and eight fire engines were dispatched to the scene, where efforts were made to control the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighboring properties. The suspect, after his arrest, allegedly made threatening comments, including antisemitic remarks, leading the authorities to also consider the incident as a potential hate crime. Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway has underlined the gravity with which the police view acts of antisemitism.

While the investigation is still underway, initial assessments point towards a local housing issue as a potential motive; however, there is no current indication of the incident being connected to broader local or global events or being classified as terrorism-related. The London Fire Brigade is conducting an investigation to determine the fire’s exact cause.

The occurrence has caused unease within Hackney’s Jewish communities, notably around the time of Purim celebrations. Law enforcement has responded by promising increased patrols and heightened visibility to ensure public safety during the festivities.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information related to the fire as both the police and the London Fire Brigade work to uncover the full circumstances behind this distressing event.
