A man died in north Queensland after being bitten by a snake, believed to be an eastern brown snake, one of Australia’s most venomous species. The incident took place at a property in Deeragun, where Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics found the victim in critical condition. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance, the man later passed away in Townsville hospital.

Eastern brown snakes are common in eastern Australia and are responsible for a significant portion of snake bite incidents in the country, largely due to habitat changes like land clearing for agriculture. Annually, there are around 3,000 snake bites reported in Australia, with brown snakes responsible for 41% of these incidents. On average, snake bites cause about two deaths each year in Australia. A review spanning 2000 to 2016 indicated that over half of the snakebite fatalities happened in or close to the victims’ homes.
