Greater Manchester Police are investigating allegations against Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner concerning the sale of her council house in Stockport and potential violations of electoral and tax laws.
Greater Manchester Police are investigating Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, concerning allegations related to the sale of her council house in Stockport in 2015. Rayner is accused of potentially violating electoral law by not properly disclosing her main residence in official documents during the early 2010s and failing to pay capital gains tax on the profit from the sale.
The new investigation was initiated following additional information provided by the Conservative Party. Prior to this, the police had stated that there would be no investigation regarding false information about her residency. Rayner, who has denied any wrongdoing, defended her actions by claiming that the property was her main home, although she acknowledged that her husband resided elsewhere at that time.
Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and other members have expressed their full support for Rayner, attesting to her compliance with the rules. Neighbours, however, have reportedly contested Rayner’s claims regarding her separate living arrangements from her then-husband.
The investigation has highlighted the scrutiny and political ramifications faced by public figures, particularly as it coincides with other ethical and legal challenges within Westminster.
