Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, reportedly declined an invitation to attend King Charles’ Coronation. This decision followed a response from King Charles, her father-in-law, which she found unsatisfactory regarding concerns she raised in a letter after her interview with Oprah Winfrey. In the interview, Meghan had expressed displeasure with how the Royal Family managed allegations, including remarks about the skin colour of her son, Archie.

Meghan’s letter to Charles, which was sent when he was still the Prince of Wales, specifically pointed to instances of what she perceived as unconscious bias within the Royal Family. Despite King Charles’ attempts to address the situation and express regret about the family division, Meghan felt the response did not fully address her concerns, influencing her decision to not attend the coronation.

The event coincided with the fourth birthday of her son, Archie, which is another factor believed to have contributed to her decision to stay in the US. Prince Harry, her husband, attended the coronation alone.

In the past, following the Oprah interview, Prince William, now the Prince of Wales, defended the Royal Family against accusations of racism, stating that the family is “not a racist family.”
