Motorists face significant travel disruptions as a large stretch of the M25 closes for upgrades and several accidents, including a fatal police chase incident, impact traffic across the UK.
A seven-mile stretch of the M25 in Surrey will be closed from 10 to 13 May to facilitate upgrades as part of a £317 million project. The closure between junctions 9 and 10 will involve the installation of concrete beams and new gantries, with motorists advised to expect delays and follow a 19-mile diversion route.
Simultaneously, travel disruptions are affecting various London transport services due to a fallen tree damaging overhead wires, impacting routes to Stansted Airport and causing substantial delays across multiple train lines and the London Tube.
Additionally, a serious crash on the M1 near Luton Airport caused significant traffic congestion, with a lorry involved in the accident and a person trapped in a vehicle needing rescue. The main carriageway has since reopened, but link roads remain closed for cleanup.
In a separate incident, a motorcyclist died after a collision with a car during a police chase on the M25 at Junction 30. The road was closed temporarily, and the incident is under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Further closures on the M25 are scheduled as part of ongoing improvement works, with significant disruptions expected during these periods. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance and utilize recommended diversion routes.
