Spectacular auroras triggered by a recent solar storm were visible in multiple regions around the world, including the UK and the US, with minor disruptions reported to communications and power grids.
A recent solar storm has resulted in spectacular displays of the Northern Lights, visible across various parts of the globe. Following the geomagnetic storm conditions, watchers in countries including Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the US, among others, experienced this natural phenomenon. In the UK, the lights were notably seen in Kent, Norwich, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England, and Wales.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported minor disruptions to power grids, communications, and satellite systems, including SpaceX’s Starlink service. CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the satellites were functioning well amid the geomagnetic pressures.
NOAA has indicated that the solar storm may continue over the weekend. This ongoing activity is part of the sun’s natural cycle, related to a significant sunspot that has produced these solar flares.
For optimal viewing of the auroras, experts suggest heading to darker, rural areas and using cameras set to night mode with adjusted exposures. The Northern Lights are expected to be visible from 10:30 pm in the northern hemisphere regions, with forecasts and viewing conditions updated regularly by meteorological and space weather agencies.
