Over 100 homes were evacuated in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, after suspicions arose about items discovered in a property on Brierley Road during a police raid on Wednesday morning. Following the find, South Yorkshire Police instituted a 100-metre cordon and sought assistance from the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. The operation led to the arrest of a 58-year-old man under the Firearms Act, who remains in custody.

Authorities anticipate the need for residents to stay evacuated for up to 48 hours. In response, Barnsley Council has established a rest centre at St Luke’s Church for displaced residents. Road closures and disruptions to local transport are ongoing.

Throughout this incident, local and police officials, including Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley and Barnsley Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, have urged the public to comply with safety advisories and thanked them for their cooperation.
