A notable incident occurred outside Grange Hurst Primary School on Anderton Road in Coventry on Tuesday, 25 March, when police intervened to assist a lost swan. The event unfolded shortly before the school day ended, as parents and guardians were present to pick up children.

The disoriented swan, believed to have originated from the nearby Wyken Slough, seemed to have lost its way. Concerned for the safety of both the bird and the children who were soon to be leaving school, officers arrived at the scene to help the swan return to its natural habitat.

Officers skilfully utilised coats to gently cover the bird and managed to transport it safely in the back of a police cruiser. This operation took place just moments before the school gates opened, preventing any potential chaos as hundreds of pupils were set to exit the school premises.

The incident was captured on video by Natalie Jones, a local parent, who shared the footage with CoventryLive. The video not only showcased the efforts of the police but also featured audible commentary that added a personal touch to the dramatic scenes unfolding.

A grandparent at the school, who witnessed the situation unfold, remarked, “I saw the swan by the school – I was a bit edgy as I know they can be dangerous so wasn’t sure what to do. This was about 3pm and the kids were due out of the school at any moment.” He continued, praising the officer’s quick and effective response: “He got a coat from the back of his car and put it over the swan – he did a great job. If I’d have known that was all you had to do I’d have had a go myself!”

The intervention by the police showcased community responsiveness and brought a light-hearted element to what could have been a potentially disruptive situation as children were arriving to exit for the day.
