Adam Smith-Neale faces suspension from professional darts events following an alleged altercation at the Nuneaton Darts Open, sparking an investigation and casting uncertainty on his career.
Adam Smith-Neale, a professional darts player ranked 82nd in the world, has been suspended from competition following an incident during the Nuneaton Darts Open. The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) made the decision after a video emerged on social media showing Smith-Neale allegedly punching an opponent at the end of their match. The occurrence has led to a significant backlash within the darts community.
The suspension was announced by the DRA Chairman, Nigel Mawer, who explained that it was in response to an accusation of assault against another player during the amateur event. Despite the altercation, which was apparently halted by the intervention of a spectator, Smith-Neale has not publicly commented on the incident.
In light of the circulating video, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) also acknowledged awareness of Smith-Neale’s actions with confirmation that the matter is under investigation. Smith-Neale, who had reclaimed his PDC tour card in 2023 after a five-year hiatus, is now barred from competing in or attending DRA sanctioned events pending a disciplinary hearing. He retains the right to appeal the decision.
As a consequence of the suspension, Smith-Neale will not participate in the upcoming Players Championship 5 and 6 events in Germany. The darts community has been left in a state of shock by the incident, with discussions ongoing regarding the impact this may have on Smith-Neale’s future in the sport. Further updates are anticipated as the investigation into the matter progresses.
