London’s incumbent mayor Sadiq Khan exhibits a strong lead in new polls over Conservative challenger Susan Hall, while Labour gains ground on the SNP in Scotland amidst local controversies.
In London, the forthcoming mayoral elections are showing a notable lead for the incumbent Mayor, Sadiq Khan, against his Conservative challenger Susan Hall. A Savanta survey conducted for the Centre for London reported that Khan is leading with 50% of the vote, while Hall trails at 26%. The survey indicates a pronounced lead for Khan in both Inner London (57% to Hall’s 19%) and Outer London (46% to Hall’s 31%). The election, scheduled for May 2, introduces the first past the post voting system, leaving some uncertainty in the final outcome. The incumbent mayor Sadiq Khan seems poised to pursue a third term.
Meanwhile, in Scottish politics, a recent YouGov poll shows Labour surpassing the Scottish National Party (SNP) for the first time since the 2014 Independence Referendum. Labour currently stands at 33% support, leading over SNP which has 31% support. The poll also indicates a decrease in support for the SNP in constituency polling and a fall in support for independence. The SNP faces internal pressures and public scrutiny over new legislations and policy changes, including the controversial prohibition of wood-burning stoves in new homes. Additionally, personal issues surrounding SNP leader Humza Yousaf are adding to the party’s challenges as his brother-in-law faces legal issues.
