Sadiq Khan has won a third term as Mayor of London, defeating Conservative candidate Susan Hall with over 1,088,225 votes, marking a significant lead of 44% against Hall’s 33%. This victory gives Khan the distinction of being the first Mayor of London to secure three terms, a position he will hold until 2028. His campaign appealed to a broad spectrum of London’s electorate, with commitments to tackle rough sleeping by 2030 and enhance environmental measures, such as countering air pollution. The election results reflect a sizeable lead of approximately 275,828 votes over Hall, and an increase from his 2021 performance.
Labour celebrated additional wins across other mayoral races in the UK, expanding control to eight additional councils and achieving a net gain of 231 seats, while the Conservative party incurred losses, including the loss of 396 councillors and 10 councils. The Conservative party did retain the mayoralty in Tees Valley, which provided some support for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak amidst wider electoral challenges.
