On Saturday evening, a severe accident occurred on the A1M near Pontefract, West Yorkshire, involving a minibus carrying South Shields FC supporters, a black Skoda Fabia, and an unidentified white car. The collision happened around 7 pm, resulting in the minibus overturning. Seventeen individuals were injured; seven of them suffered serious injuries and were hospitalised. The football fans were returning from a match where South Shields FC lost 3-2 to Tamworth in the Vanarama National League North season.

The incident prompted an immediate response from emergency services, including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Traffic was disrupted with road closures extending until Sunday morning. South Shields FC has expressed profound concern for the well-being of their fans and has pledged extensive support.
