An incident in Belgravia involving spooked Household Cavalry horses led to injuries among soldiers and horses, and caused disruptions in central London.
On a recent day in Belgravia, central London, an incident involving spooked Household Cavalry horses led to injuries among two soldiers and two horses. The chaos ensued when construction noises frightened the animals during a routine exercise, causing them to bolt uncontrollably through crowded city streets.
The frightened horses ran through various parts of central London, including a notable moment when two saddled horses were seen galloping down Aldwych, which police later managed to halt miles from the initial breakout spot. The unsettling scene also saw horses colliding with a taxi and a tour bus near Buckingham Palace Road, resulting in further injuries and damages.
Following the incident, four soldiers were thrown from their mounts, with three needing hospital treatment. Two of these soldiers remain hospitalized. Of the seven horses involved, two suffered significant injuries. One horse named Quaker has undergone surgery and is showing signs of recovery, whereas another horse, Vida, continues to receive veterinary care for its injuries.
Despite the dramatic scenes in the city, the Household Cavalry’s Major General’s Inspection proceeded as scheduled in Hyde Park. The British Army has since expressed appreciation for the support from the public and emergency services and reiterated its commitment to the care and recovery of all those involved. They have also emphasized the ongoing effort to enhance safety measures and training for the horses, which are accustomed to extensive desensitization training to prepare them for urban environments. The expected full recovery of the horses is anticipated, although officials have noted that the process will require time and patience.
